June Check In

June has been crazy. Which is probably notable since I haven’t posted at all, and I try to post at least once a week. But life has been all over the place. Here’s a general idea of what’s going on.

  1. I launched a new blog. You can read it at projectsunshineblog.wordpress.com
  2. The school year ended.
  3. My brother graduated from high school.
  4. Soon I’ll be starting my summer job, so I’ve been busy making sure that everything is in order.
  5. I’ve been looking for a full time teaching job.

These aren’t excuses for not posting, but it is what’s been going on in my life. I had a plan for what I wanted to write about in June, and I’m going to carry it over to July. I will be back. I haven’t forgotten. And I certainly haven’t abandoned this blog. I love this blog.

Lost Month

I’m calling February the lost month since today is the only day I managed to pull it together to blog, and it’s Leap Day. However, since I am blogging today I still haven’t missed a month since I started this blog over a year ago.

I’ve learned a lot since starting the blog. I need to have a direction and a purpose, which fortunately this blog does. I’ve learned that I need to plan in advance and know what I want to talk about. I’ve learned that I need to be consistent in posting because that’s the only way to gain an audience.

March will be better. I have a better system now, and I feel really recommitted to the blog. I think it’s important to have a lost month every now and then, but it’s really important to¬† get back on track and not fall down the rabbit hole.

Come and continue on this journey with me. I can’t wait to see where staying committed to this blog leads me.

Happy Early Birthday

Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of englishnook. I can’t believe that it’s been a year since I started this blog. I can’t believe that I managed to get something posted each month even when my life was totally crazy. I can’t believe how excited I am for what the next year holds.

The first year of this blog was certainly a fledgling year. This blog was started as a project for class, and the idea literally came to me one night while I was driving home from class. I was already writing a personal blog, and it made sense to me to start a blog that was focused on English and teaching since that’s the field I’m in.

Some months the posts have been plentiful. Some months I’ve only managed to post once. One of my big hopes for this year is to schedule posts in advance so that there are regular posts for everyone who’s reading this blog and following this blog to see.

I’ve also made a few small changes. I added a page where I can post about the books I’m reading and my reading journal. The category “Pieces of Wisdom” has remained the same, but the quotes posts have been re-titled “Quotable Quotes”.

I also think it would be great to have more “Question of the Week” posts. I think it would be a great way to engage with readers and learn new things.

And of course, I’m always open to ideas and suggestions. If you have something that you want to share with me, by all means do so. I love hearing from my readers.

Happy early birthday to englishnook. Here’s to another great year.

Hello, 2016!

I’m the type of person who gets excited about the new year. I feel that it holds endless opportunities and adventures and so many other fun and exciting things. Here’s what’s on my mind right now.

I am excited to share 2016 with all of you.

I can’t wait to share the books I’m reading. And feel free to share what you’re reading with me.

I am planning on blogging more regularly this year than I did last year.

Very shortly this blog will be 1 year old. I can’t believe that it’s been a year since I started englishnook. Where has the time gone?

Grad school is done. School in general is done for me, at least for the time being. That’s never been an event in my life before. I’ve always had school, and I’m excited to have more free time.

I’m looking forward to growing professionally. I have a new job that I love, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

What’s new with all of you? What do you have in store for 2016? Let me know!

An Update

You may or may not have noticed that englishnook is slowly evolving. This blog began as a school project but has evolved into something that I truly and 100% love. I want this blog to be a success. As I move forward in my career I think it’s more and more important to have this resource to share what I’m learning, what I’m reading, what websites I’m using, and everything else.

I’ve taken out some of the pages that seemed irrelevant. I’ve worked hard to add more resources to the resources page and articles to the articles page. And I’ll keep adding. And I’ve been posting, and I’ll keep posting. Somewhere along the way I lost my mojo with this blog, but it’s back now, and I can’t wait to see where the next year takes this blog.

Lessons Learned from Student Teaching

As impossible as it is for me to believe, I am done with student teaching. I finished last Tuesday, and I have spent the past week getting my life back in order. For me, part of getting everything back in order means getting back to blogging. I have been shamefully absent the past couple of months, but I have more time now, and I plan on blogging on a much more regular basis.

To get back in the swing of things, I wanted to take this entry to share some of the lessons I learned while student teaching. I had an amazing student teaching experience, and I learned so much throughout it. It only makes sense to me that I would come back here and share those lessons with all of you.

  • Plan everything.
  • Be flexible with your plans and able to change them.
  • Procedures are everything.
  • Model everything. It’s important for students to see how to do an assignment.
  • Some lessons flop, and that’s OK.
  • Think on your feet and be able to make changes in the moment.
  • Good classroom management is key.
  • Planning a unit is hard. Really really hard.
  • A good team has your back.
  • It’s better to overplan than underplan.
  • There’s always room for improvement.
  • Reflection is of the utmost importance.
  • There will be bad days.
  • Have a backup plan.
  • Students will sometimes be mean to you. Sometimes those are the students you’ll have the strongest bond with.
  • Rubrics are important.
  • You will plan and plan and replan. At least in the beginning.
  • It’s long hours. Really long hours.
  • In the end, you’ll love it, and it’ll be awesome. You’re following your passion and chasing the dream you’ve had since you were fifteen. You’re where you’re supposed to be, and life is good.

My last lesson is, to me, the most important lesson. I have wanted to teach since I was 15, a sophomore in high school! It’s been a long journey to where I am now, but I wouldn’t have changed a single thing. I know that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, and I am doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing.

Oh Hello There

It’s been a really long time since I posted anything. For a while I was doing better with posting regularly, and then, quite simply, I wasn’t. Life got busy and student teaching started which has been crazy and hectic and awesome all at once. It’s given me a lot of different things that I want to share with all of you, but today is not that day.

Today I just wanted to say hello and say that I haven’t forgotten about this little fledgling blog. I actually think about this blog a lot. I want to be posting more. Every day I learn new things or discover new things or create new things that I think would be great to write about on this blog.

And then I come home, and I’m tired, and I don’t post. And that’s bad. I need to work on my time management and productivity. It’s kind of an across the board thing. It’s a goal, and I’m good with goals. And to do lists. I have a lot happening in life right now, and I just need to start managing everything better.
